Not content with offering practically every consumer good imaginable from its e-commerce platform Amazon is set to begin flogging vehicles directly for the first time.
Amazon to drive vehicle sales by going bumper to bumper with UK auto trade websites
In a direct challenge to existing auto trade portals Amazon is set to launch UK sales following the success of a test run in Italy, sensing an opportunity to muscle in on a lucrative field as traditional forecourt dealerships lose ground.
Vehicle manufacturers are increasingly looking to leave out the middleman by taking online sales inhouse, at the cusp of this trend is BMW which last year mounted its first marketing push for its own ecommerce platform.
By selling direct manufacturers can offer to customize cars to individual preference, a concept Volkswagen has also latched onto with its own adtech plans.
The news has set the cat amongst the pigeons as far as established players such as AutoTrader, which dominate UK sales, are concerned with many already braced for radical changes set to sweep the sector courtesy of Apple and Alphabet.
News that Amazon was even considering a move onto its turf sent shares in AutoTrader dropping by 5.8% while German compatriot Scout24 AG also slid 5.4%.
