Mono, an agency based in Minneapolis with an office in San Francisco, has made an addition to its senior-level creative team, hiring Blake Bäkken as a creative in the agency’s San Francisco office. Bringing over two decades of experience to the table – including 13 years at Venables Bell & Partners where he founded the design department and co-founded VBP Orange, the agency’s design arm – Bäkken will be championing and developing mono's design vision across multiple accounts, including Google and Stanford Health Care.

“I’ve always admired Blake’s work and am thrilled to have him join our team,” says Paula Maki, managing creative director, mono San Francisco. “His passion for craft and experience both at agencies and design shops will be incredibly helpful as we continue to grow our team. He brings an intensity to visual storytelling that’s a perfect complement to mono’s strategic, design-driven ethos.”

After a decade at San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners, Bäkken moved to New York City where he spent time at design firms Turner Duckworth and Siegel + Gale. Throughout his career, he has worked with high level clients, including Google, HBO, Target, Vitamin Water, Reebok and Audi. Bäkken is making the move back to the west coast, officially starting at mono San Francisco on June 5.

“Optimism, honesty and chemistry drew me back westward,” said Bäkken. “This move is the culmination of my experiences in branding firms, design studios and ad agencies and I’m both humbled and honored to join the mono team.”

Mono opened its San Francisco office in summer 2015, in response to the agency’s growing West Coast-based clients. The office is run by two mono veterans, both originally from Minneapolis, Jane Delworth (managing director, 9 years at mono) and Paula Maki (managing creative director, 10 years at mono). Since opening, the office has experienced steady growth, both in strategic new hires and new business, having most recently won creative AOR for Stanford Health Care, with its fully-integrated campaign launching in September 2017.

In addition to Bäkken, mono San Francisco has also recently welcomed project leader veteran David Watts Miller, who was previously at Kirshenbaum, Bond, Senecal + Partners and Hal Riney.

Additional mono clients include: Walmart, Loews Hotels, PepsiCo, Google, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, among others.
