Stone left Twitter in 2011 to focus on his startup Jelly, which he has now sold on to Pinterest. He has said his return to the business doesn't mean he'll be replacing anyone, just filling a "Biz-shaped hole."
Announcing his comeback to Twitter in a blog post, Stone said: "My top focus will be to guide the company culture, that energy, that feeling. This is where Jack, and Twitter’s inestimable chief marketing officer, Leslie Berland, feel I can have the most powerful impact.
"It’s important that everyone understands the whole story of Twitter and each of our roles in that story. I’ll shape the experience internally so it’s also felt outside the company. More soon."
Details of Stone's specific role have yet to be confirmed by Twitter.
The microblogging site was founded in 2006 by Stone, Dorsey, Noah Glass and Evan Williams. After having stepped into the background Dorsey returned to the fore as chief executive in 2015, replacing Dick Costolo.
Under Dorsey's tenure Twitter has sought to innovate in order to assuage investors following several rounds of disappointing financial results. Under it's 'See What's Happening' mantra — which seeks to position the platform as a place for breaking news and live events — the platform has recently inked a deal with Bloomberg to air live video to users 24 hours a day, seven days a week via its desktop and app offerings.
"Twitter has woven itself into the fabric of our global society," said Stone. "The world needs Twitter, and it’s here to stay. I’m so lucky that I get to step back in and help shape it’s future."
