M&S poaches Halfords chief Jill McDonald to turn around underperforming clothing arm

Ensconced in the top seat at Halfords since 2015, McDonald will remain in post until October before jumping ship to M&S to replace incumbent Steve Rowe, who has been handling affairs in an interim capacity until a replacement could be arranged.

Commenting on her switch, McDonald said: “Halfords is a great company with a fantastic team of people throughout the business, making my decision to leave all the more difficult.

"I have long been an M&S customer and professional fan, so working with the brand was a career opportunity that I just couldn't turn down. I am looking forward to joining Steve and the team later this year to build on the plans that are already underway."

While clothing has struggled food sales have boomed, prompting the retailer to trial its own online grocery service later in the year.
