Whatsapp might be introducing peer-to-peer payments in India, according to a report by TechCrunch.
Whatsapp reportedly launching peer-to-peer payment services within six months
The instant messaging platform is reportedly planning to use UPI, a cross-payment system backed by the Indian government, to enable users to pay each other.
“India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we’re understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users,” said a Whatsapp spokesperson in a statement.
The IM platform has admitted that it has been looking into such services earlier this year when co-founder Brian Acton said it was “in the early stages” of looking into incorporating payment services.
