While it is known that prime minister Theresa May and first minister Nicola Sturgeon don’t see eye-to-eye on any important issues of state it appears that this divergence extends to the wildly differing views expressed by both politicians on the tone of press coverage of their recent Glasgow tête-à-tête.

Wading into the sexism storm, May believes the Daily Mail hasn’t put a foot wrong in penning its much commented headline, while her Holyrood counterpart believes the right-wing bible doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

In a front-page editorial discussing the meeting the Daily Mail ignored the thorny issues of Brexit and Indyref2 to focus instead on both leaders' lower limbs, declaring ‘Never Mind Brexit, who won Legs-it!’

Sturgeon was scathing of the Mail for giving the wrong kind of lowdown, warning that its coverage was ‘dragging Britain back to the 1970s’.

A spokesperson for Sturgeon remarked: “Brexit may risk taking Britain back to the 1970s, but there is no need for coverage of events to lead the way.”

In this, as in most other matters, May adopted a more equanimous tack, telling the Wolverhampton Express and Star: “Obviously what we do as politicians is what makes a difference to people’s lives. I think that most people concentrate on what we do as politicians. But if people want to have a bit of fun about how we dress, then so be it.”

In response the Daily Mail, no friend of the SNP, told its ‘po-faced’ critics to ‘get a life’, although whether that will wash with the Independent Press Standards Organisation remains to be seen, they are currently dealing with more than 300 complaints over the piece.
