Curated stories aggregation platform Medium has debuted a new paid subscription tier for its members as part of a much vaunted new business model designed to bolster its balance sheet.

Members willing to pay for the privilege will be rewarded with exclusive content as well as early access to new features as soon as they are published, before the penny-pinching masses. Fully paid-up subscribers can also take advantage of an offline reading list which can be downloaded onto any device.

Medium is offering its premium service at an introductory rate of $5 per month with a promise that 100% of the revenue raised will be ploughed back to its writers directly.

Chief executive Ev Williams announced the changes in February in a bid to fix a ‘broken’ advertising model which had forced the business to slash staffing levels by a third.
