US retail behemoth Walmart has snapped up women’s fashion retailer ModCloth, an online retailer specializing in vintage-style clothing, for an undisclosed sum.

Purchase of the 15-year-old business has been made on behalf of its Jet.com ecommerce arm.

Founded by founded by high school sweethearts Susan Gregg Koger and Eric Koger in 2002 ModCloth has grown to become a $150m empire by 2015, a breakneck period of expansion which included a relocation to San Francisco and experiments with physical stores.

Despite this success profits remained tight prompting investors to shy away from stumping up further cash, resulting in Jet stepping into the breach as a means of stocking a wider range of products.

Jet has been on something of an acquisition spree of late having been acquired by Walmart for $3bn, shelling out for ShoeBuy and outdoor goods specialist Moosejaw.
