Action camera and software specialist GoPro has extended a recent run of job losses with plans to lay off a further 270 people, continuing a program of severe retrenchment.

The latest job losses follow earlier rounds of cuts which saw 300 posts lost last year, a response to a disastrous 2015. Something of an annus horriblis for GoPro this fateful year saw its stock price tank in the wake of poor Christmas sales and a product recall for its flagship folding Karma drone, amidst reports some were losing power while in use.

Since then GoPro has steadied the ship somewhat to the extent that revenues for 2017 have thus far come in at the top end of estimates, although it seems this was not enough to save the 270 staff.

GoPro founder Nick Woodman said: “We’re determined that GoPro’s financial performance match the strength of our products and brand,” he said in a statement issued alongside the financial news. “Importantly, expense reductions preserve our product roadmap and we are tracking to full-year non-GAAP profitability in 2017.”

It is believed that the majority of the cuts affect GoPro’s virtual reality and broadcasting divisions.

It hasn't all been one-way traffic however with GoPro also recruiting Apple's Daniel Coster as VP of design.
