BBC One’s new show Big Painting Challenge, not to be mistaken for its 2015 show by the same name, has changed tact and is seeking the next generation of Snapchat artists in a new campaign that forms part of the broadcaster’s move to woo a millennial audience.

The weekly show, produced by BBC Studios, will put ten amateur contestants through a six-week artistic boot-camp before crowning eventually a winner.

Each week a Snapchat artist will set a challenge to followers of the BBC One Snapchat account and will give tips on how to create art on the social platform. The public are being asked to share their creations on Snapchat, or on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #BigPaintingChallenge. Artists include @TurbanChino, @mplatco and @geeohsnap.

This week, @TristanTales, a San Francisco-based professional Snapchat artist, has challenged Snapchatters to create art that people can interact with – using an example of balloon popping.

He said: “Snapchat art isn’t about creating a masterpiece – it’s about getting creative with the world around you. It’s fast, fun and easy to do, so there’s no reason not to get involved and start creating your own little works of art.”

Diana Ali and Pascal Anson, the art mentors coaching contestants through the six-week Big Painting Challenge, believe Snapchat is simply another medium budding artists can use to express their creativity.

"Snapchat is bold, colourful and exaggerates the world we see. We live in a fast world where we often miss the beauties of life. Take a minute and capture something that we walk past every day, such as tops of buildings, cloud formations or interesting textures in the urban world. Make them into bold and colourful images to help us notice what we miss! Enjoy, and look beyond the obvious,” Ali said.

Submissions will be collected in a public gallery on a dedicated section of the BBC site.
