He is accused of promising as much as £30.4m to a friend of South Korean President Park Geun-hye in exchange for government support of his succession to control the conglomerate founded by his grandfather.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the warrant for his arrest, saying there was a risk of him destroying evidence or fleeing the country.

The police also tried to obtain an arrest wanted for Samsung Electronics President Park Sang-Jin. However, it was denied and repots suggest that he might assume some of Lee’s responsibilities.

“We will do our best to ensure that the truth is revealed in future court proceedings,” Samsung Group said in a statement.

Samsung has denied it made an unlawful offer or paid a bribe to the president in exchange for favours.
