Lyft leapfrogs Uber in Apple downloads amidst ‘DeleteUber backlash

An analysis of downloads conducted by App Annie on Sunday showed that Lyft more than doubled its average daily iOS downloads compared to a fortnight prior, sufficient to see it overtake the market leader.

This follows a bitter social media backlash against Uber from some who claimed the ride booking service had undermined protests against the travel ban by turning off surge pricing at New York’s JFK Airport – a move seen as disrupting a protest by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance which had been holding a strike.

This stance was in stark contrast to Lyft which said it would donate $1m to the American Civil Liberties Union, fueling the rise of a #DeleteUber call to arms across social media on Sunday.

Interestingly a similar analysis of Android downloads showed no comparable Lyft bounce with Uber retaining the number one spot.

Despite its 24 hours in the limelight Lyft remains the David to Uber’s Goliath with a market valuation of $5.5bn versus Uber’s $68bn capitalization.
