Airbus CEO claims Bond-style ‘flying car’ prototype could take off this year

Chief executive Tom Enders displayed some blue sky thinking with the formation of an Urban Air Mobility division only last year to devise technological solutions for a helicopter-style vehicle that can ferry several passengers at a time through the air on journeys bookable via an app.

Enders said: “One hundred years ago, urban transport went underground, now we have the technological wherewithal to go above ground. We are in an experimentation phase, we take this development very seriously.

“With flying, you don't need to pour billions into concrete bridges and roads.”

Just how seriously Enders is taking the plan is evidenced by the tight timescales involved, with a single-person car/chopper set to be unveiled before the year is out.

Subject to regulatory approval these could form the backbone of an Uber-style passenger service ferrying passengers above congested roads.
