The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) has launched a powerful public service announcement (PSA) aiming to draw attention to the racism black girls experience through school disciple practices and administrative bias.

Proving young black girls and smart, capable and powerful, the film aims to end school ‘pushout’ of African American teens.

According to statistics black girls are five times more likely than white girls to get suspended from US schools, despite the fact the offences committed by both groups – often dress code and behavioral policy violations – are much the same.

In the PSA, the young black girls reveal how they and their peers have been unfairly targeted and labeled ‘aggressive’, ‘loud’, ‘angry’, ‘unladylike’ and ‘rude’ by school staff.

Speaking about the film to Mashable, Nia Evans, engagement and mobilization associate for NWLC, said: “It’s never been more important to highlight the barriers black girls face in schools and eradicate the discrimination that threatens their success. The Let Her Learn campaign invites the public to get involved and help turn this reality around. This will be an uphill battle.”

In addition to the film, the NWLC has also released a toolkit for students – in both English and Spanish – providing a starting point for students who want to learn their rights, advocate for change in school policy and where to find dedicated help.
