Global poverty charity Oxfam is seeking to reach out to the hands of donors and volunteers directly via a new My Oxfam app designed to both increase transparency of its work and encourage donations.

In return for downloading the app individuals will be offered a breakdown of how their donations are spent, video diaries prepared by frontline Oxfam staff, live updates on developing emergency situations and personal stories from some of those to have benefited from the charities work.

Outlining the fresh approach Oxfam’s head of fundraising, Paul Vanags, said: “Charities are striving to meet the public’s demand for a closer, more modern and responsive relationship with the charities they support. My Oxfam provides a window on to the lives changed by our supporters’ generosity and allows users to control their giving from the palm of their hand.”

The smartphone tool forms part of a concerted effort to rebuild trust in the organisation, rocked in recent years by revelations of excessive executive pay, the collapse of Kids Company and the suicide of Olive Cooke after the veteran volunteer was bombarded by 3,000 charity mailings.

Scandals such as these have seen trust in the charity sector slump to the lowest level since records began according to one poll by the Charity Commission.
