Boutique Bay Area firm AMF Media Group, based in San Ramon, California, has hired former Wieden+Kennedy creative Geoff McGann as its new executive creative director.

The agency also announced the promotion of Joe Lopez from associate creative director to creative director. Prior to joining AMF two years ago, Lopez served at agencies including BBDO, FCB and Doner. In his new role Lopez will oversee the agency’s creative operations from its headquarters in San Ramon, California.

McGann began his career at W+K and was part of the team that created the iconic “Just Do It” campaign. He went on to work at 72andSunny and Public Interest, a non-profit advertising agency and production company dedicated to socially-aware, cause-marketing initiatives, founded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition, he was named a professor at noted ad school VCU Brandcenter. He then founded his own company, McGann/Zhang, which evolved into McGann+Partners before joining AMF Media Group.

Long a supporter of education in the industry, McGann previously taught at W+K’s school, WK12, and opened 72andSunny’s 72U.

Over the past 35 years, McGann has been a creative force behind powerful campaigns for both non-profit and commercial clients, including prominent brands such as Miller Lite, MTV and Gap. McGann will lead the agency’s creative team, develop brand strategy and manage the design and production of creative assets from the agency’s Los Angeles office.

“Geoff McGann brings tremendous success and experience in driving campaigns for household brands, such as Nike, to our growing agency. His industry reputation as an innovator makes him extremely valuable to AMF, and we look forward to continuing to bring results-driven, award-winning campaigns to clients of all shapes and sizes,” said Vintage Foster, president of AMF Media Group.

“AMF’s boutique size and major-league team gives it the unique ability to be agile and serve clients with evolving needs,” said McGann. “It appealed to me as an opportunity to leverage the various aspects of my background to deliver true impact for clients.”

McGann has extensive experience as a creative director, writer, executive producer and manager of creative teams, account teams, production vendors and clients. He’s received Gold award accolades from the Cannes Lions, The One Show and Communication Arts, and he also gained prominence as an artist and fine art photographer, hosting private and public gallery shows.
