The industry luminary's remit will include CPG. retail, entertainment, auto, tech and more and he will report to the visual bookmarking site's head of partner marketing, Cat Lee.
Monahan is an advertising veteran, having held various roles at IPG Media Lab and being credited as the co-founder of media and events firm NewCo.
Commenting on his appointment, Monahan said: "There are lots of places for marketers to invest that will show good results on paper but not really move the needle. Pinterest has the scale, the commercial intent and the sophisticated ad products to help partners grow."
He joins the business at a time when it is increasingly focused on ramping up what it can offer to advertisers. Over the course of the year Pinterest has debuted an auction-based system that allows advertisers to bid on CPM campaigns, and introduced several new formats for marketers.
Pinterest president Tim Kendall said Monahan's "tremendous advertising experience and leadership," would fuel strong partner growth across all of the company's strategic verticals.
Monahan will be based at Pinterest's headquarters in San Francisco.
