Uber has hit the ground running with its newly launched artificial intelligence research unit through the purchase of Geometric Intelligence, a machine-learning start-up with 15 employees.

Uber AI Labs is being led by Gary Marcus, professor of psychology and neural science at New York University, with a view to harnessing cognitive science to devise new machine learning techniques which place less reliance on data.

Such software enables computers to adapt on the fly to changed inputs without having to be explicitly be programmed to react by a software engineer – handing it a real-time advantage to changing prices, supply and demand to produce optimal calculations.

This work should allow Uber to devise new algorithms with which to better pair drivers and passengers, particularly in the more complex carpooling sector, as well as developing innovative new techniques for the development of self-driving cars.

The ride-hailing service is betting big on driverless cars, forming a substantial research base in Pittsburgh to pursue its interests in autonomous vehicles and robotics
