WPP AUNZ agency 1 Kent Street has been hired by Recognise, a campaign dedicated to getting recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander peoples as the first Australians.

The agency has been tasked with driving awareness of the issues, with the ultimate outcome to be a successful referendum that would drive Constitutional change.

Recognise joint campaign director, Tim Gartrell, said: “Change to our Constitution can only come with the approval of a majority of voters in a majority of states. That’s why there needs to be high levels of public awareness and a very large and broad movement of support. Succeeding at a referendum is challenging, but our Constitution needs to tell our country’s whole story. It is a major issue and one that affects us all, because it is about who we are as a nation.”

The win concludes following a competitive pitch and 1 Kent Street will join fellow WPP AUNZ agency Ikon on the roster, which is the incumbent for Recognise’s media task.

The agency said work on the campaign had already begun and it would target all Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander communities.
