Oddbins has unveiled a bizarre Christmas ad featuring 12 chimps to show that “everybody who loves wine should give a crap this Christmas and be discerning in their choices”.

The unusual spot follows on from the brand’s 2015 surreal effort that featured a curious fox and is the latest in a long line of videos from the drinks retailer that have featured a menagerie of different animals including bears and penguins.
The 12 apes in the campaign are meant to represent 12 brand attributes ascribed to Oddbins by its customers. The ad depicts the creatures combining their skills to break into an Oddbins branch in the middle of a night before decorating the store and sampling some of the drinks on offer.
When the unimpressed store manager arrives in the morning, the chimps chuck their own waste at him in a move that essentially cements the campaign’s position as the anti-John Lewis ad.
Oddbins marketing manager Lyndsey Gibbons, said: “The message in our video is simple: not caring about Christmas is not an option. Everyone needs to give a shit and our chimps in the video really make that point in the only way they know how – through flinging their poop…”
“While the video might seem ridiculous, it conveys a deep and profound message, the details of which escape me right now, however the basic gist is that everybody who loves wine should give a crap this Christmas and be discerning in their choices.”
She added: “When you don’t have a budget to employ dozens of CGI animator types and haven’t the time to track down someone with an acrobatic boxer dog, it makes it easier to make a video without lots of heartstring-pulling emotional claptrap. This is what we have done, the Oddbins way.”
