Nike N7 celebrates Native American Heritage Month
Nike celebrated Native American Heritage Month by partnering with nine colleges throughout November and December to wear the N7 uniforms. During select men’s and women’s games, Florida State, Gonzaga, Haskell Indian Nations University, Nevada, New Mexico, Marquette, Oklahoma State, San Diego State and Stanford will each wear N7-inspired turquoise uniforms.
Nike N7 celebrates Native American Heritage Month
N7 is Nike’s commitment 'to inspire and enable two million Native American and Aboriginal youth in North America to participate in sport and physical activity'. The company works to embrace the Native philosophy, “In every deliberation we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”
In 2009, Nike debuted the N7 Collection to celebrate Native American culture to raise awareness for the N7 Fund. Nike has contributed more than $4 million to Native American youth sport programs. Since 2010 when the N7 turquoise uniform was first worn, participation in the program has grown from one school to nine.
In addition to playing in the turquoise — which means harmony, friendship and fellowship in Native American culture — these schools will also do local outreach to Native communities. Gonzaga, Marquette and Nevada will run basketball camps; Oklahoma State will hold a Native youth spring field day; and Seminole Tribe of Florida youth programs with Florida State. San Diego State works with N7 Fund grantee Inter Tribal Sports by hosting a basketball camp and the New Mexico men’s and women’s teams auction their uniforms and donations go to local Native American youth organizations.
