Apple is reportedly set to double down on its wearables push following a lukewarm reception for the Apple Watch by developing a pair of high-tech spectacles which offer the wearer an augmented reality view of the world.

Ad Age reports that the top-secret gadget would communicate wirelessly with a paired iPhone to relay images and other information direct to the owner’s field of vision, backing up this claim with rumours that a small number of near-eye displays have been ordered for testing.

Whilst it makes sense that Apple would be investigating the use of such tech it is far from clear that the device would ever make it out into the wild, with no mass component orders as yet to back-up an imminent launch.

Apple has come under intense pressure to diversify its product line amidst concern amongst consumers and investors that the company has lost its knack for innovation and is merely coasting on the success of the iPhone.

Such voices are likely to be hoarse before the AR specs see the light of day however, with 2018 thought to be the earliest possible release date.

Despite stagnation fears Apple continues to be voted as the UK's 'coolest' brand.
