New York’s Empire State Building has been transformed into a giant US election tracker, with the stone edifice basking in a striking shade of scarlet to signify Republican Donald Trump’s unexpected win.

The crimson display on the south façade was specially installed for election night, which had earlier carried headshots of both Hillary Clinton and Trump which were beamed onto the façade as live polling results rolled in over the course of the night.

Transforming the Art-Deco masterpiece into a 32-storey advertising billboard, the light show displayed a combination of red, blue and white lights powered by 40 projectors installed in a building sitting a full three blocks away.

In a statement, broadcaster CNN, which helped organise the light show, said: “CNN, Instagram, and CA Technologies, in an exclusive partnership with the Empire State Building (ESB), are bringing to the New York City skyline a breathtaking display of photography, real-time election results, maps, voter mosaics and animations to commemorate one of the nation’s most significant elections.”

Trump supporters were left cheering the display as Clinton officially conceded the campaign in a telephone call, the moment when the real-estate mogul became the 45th US president.
