Each code is generated for non-commercial use only and will expire within 28 days of being requested by an iTunes connect user an admin or marketer role.

Apple appears to have been spurred into action after Google introduced its own promo codes for the Android Play store back in January in a move designed to aid promotional pushes by developers.
