BBC Worldwide has teased the fact that Singaporean Sherlock fans will be able to simulcast the new series of Sherlock in January, as part of an ‘unofficial’ launch of BBC Player in the country.

Sherlock will be available in Singapore at the same time as the UK

BBC Worldwide has been testing a paid-for subscription service in Singapore, alongside broadcast partner Starhub, but it is now available more widely.

The new series was teased globally but BBC Worldwide also said in an announcement that “fans will be able to catch the new series on BBC Player — simulcast with the UK. It will then be available on BBC First (StarHub Channel 522) within 24 hours”.

A social media campaign showed the new trailer and BBC Worldwide has called on Singaporean fans to get involved via the hashtags #Sherlock, #BBCPlayer and #BBCPlayerSG, the latter being a sign that the player is now launched.

Speaking earlier this year at an event in Singapore, David Weiland, BBC Worldwide EVP of Asia, said: “We launched our on demand drama service BBC First with Starhub and it’s now available on StarGo and set top boxes because we’ve learnt that premium drama is consumed on demand. Later this year we are launching BBC Player with Starhub which will be authenticated services and content across all the genres. People will be able to subscribe and get four linear channels of content. We’re adding a download service as well,” he said.

The new season of Sherlock is primed to broadcast in early January but a specific time has not yet been set.
