Giphy, the specialist animated gif search engine, has raised a healthy $72m from Silicon Valley based venture capital investors in under a year as the internet’s enduring love affair with primitive animation continues unabated with many attributing the medium with fuelling creativity.

Despite growth in high definition video the humble gif remains the dominant medium for expressing emotion on social media, a niche Giphy has colonised to great effect by integrating its custom gif search into Twitter, Tinder and iMessage amongst others.

Welcoming the cash injection Giphy said in a blog post: “Now, even more people will get to have fun with Giphy all over the world.

We promise to keep giving you more of the best Gifs in real time, great tools to make your own Gif content, and the easiest ways to share and use Gifs.

Gifs everywhere, for everyone. Giphy. All the Gifs.”

Giphy has grown to serve over 1bn gifs every day on a variety of platforms including Tinder, Bumble, Outlook, Twitter and iMessage.

It also opened the world’s first gif studio where people can create and unleash their own gifs.
