Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has proven himself to be open minded after openly postulating of a ‘pharmacological’ future for the media industry in which entertainment drugs and pills are popped in lieu of channel hopping.

The radical future vision was outlined at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJD event in which Hastings stated that movies and TV shows would become the equivalent of ‘operas and novels’ in future societies with mass market entertainment taking the form of various ‘substitutes’.

Pressed as to what form these substitutes might take Reed said that ‘pharmacological’ alternatives were one option being actively looked at in the longer term by taking drugs to stimulate their senses for an evening of entertainment.

Whilst Netflix isn’t likely to be branching out into pharmacy any time soon the audacious vision proves that the streaming service isn’t afraid to think outside the box when it comes to future possibilities.
