Facebook unveils standalone app for Events
Facebook is launching a standalone app for its social media-driven calendar that will record events tied to the Pages a person likes as well as highlight those their friends are interested in attending.
Facebook launches standalone Event app.
The glorified calendar lets users browse through recommendations based on time, location and interest. Additionally, there’s a map to help people find events that are close to them or in another city should they plan to travel there on vacation. The app also pulls in entries from calendars already on someone’s phone.
The app follows in the footsteps of Facebook's other core features (like Messenger) in that it has been spun off into a standalone service. Having a separate app may give people more of a reason to tune into the social network in order to see what’s happening around them, especially if it incorporates other upcoming tasks from another calendar all in one place.
As with its other services, Facebook is clear it wants the conversation happening around its own platform and like with Messenger, an app for Events could open new revenue streams. Imagine, if someone followed an advertiser’s page and could receive notifications for pop-up sales or special promotions.
