People on the Move: Hires and departures at the Lad Bible, Google, Mashable and more

This week has seen another wave of appointments and departures at brands, media owners and agencies. The Drum has rounded up the key moves from the EMEA, APAC and North America regions below.

EMEA people are on the move

Getty Images

Getty Images has appointed Jennifer Ferguson to the newly created role as senior vice-president of global communications.

Joining from Christie’s, an international fine arts purveyor, Ferguson will sit on the company’s executive committee and work to drive the brands new business strategy.

This appointment follows a number of recent appointments from Getty Images in the last year.

Audio Network

International music group, Audio Network has appointed Robb Smith as its new Group chief executive.

Joining the organization from Studiocanal, Smith will take up the position with immediate effect to lead the company further into international growth and implementing new digital strategy.

Talking about his role, Smith said: “I look forward to being able to contribute my experience and expand and develop the company further.”

Telegraph

Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has appointed Yahoo’s vice-president EMEA, Nich Hugh, as its first ever chief operating officer, the creation of which could mean it is preparing to open up new revenue streams as publishers are increasingly under pressure to make up declines in print revenue.

Hugh will assume responsibility for all TMG's revenue streams and commercial operations and will report to chief executive Murdoch MacLennan.

The Lad Bible

Mimi Turner, marketing director at the Lad Bible, has become the latest in a string of senior staff to leave the publisher.

The PR-savvy marketer confirmed her exit with a tweet (see below) this evening (3 October), bringing an end to what she described as an “incredible two years” at the publisher. Turner could not be reached to add any further comment when approached by The Drum.

She was the only female in Lad Bible's senior management team and has been a figurehead in its journey from start-up to what has become one of the few true success stories in modern publishing.

Rubicon Project

Rubicon Project has tapped Google's Tom Kershaw to take on the role of chief product and engineering officer.

Effective immediately, the appointment will see the executive assume responsibility for the oversight of all aspects of the firm's product development, platform strategy, product design, prioritization, and go-to-market planning.

He will also be responsible for overseeing the ad tech outfit's engineering capabilities based out of the firm's head offices in Los Angeles where he will report to Rubicon Project’s president, Gregory R Raifman.

BETC London

BETC London has snapped up industry veteran Russell Davies to join its management team as chief strategy officer as the agency looks to bounce back following a tumultuous two years.

In the role, Davies will alongside work executive creative director Rosie Bardales and the soon to be appointed managing director.

Davies’ brief will see him work across brands such as Cow & Gate, Gant, Air France and the recently won Coty account when he starts in January.

Jack Morton Worldwide

Jack Morton Worldwide has appointed Christpher Butler as new director of content studio effective immediately.

Joining from Gyro as head of film and creative content with over 13 years’ industry experience, Butler has worked with brands including Adidas, Shell, Bacardi and Sony Ericsson.

Speaking about his new role Butler said: “As technology continues to surge ahead, particularly in the fields of AR and VR, the opportunities opening up in these fields are truly game-changing for brands.”

CHI & Partners

Chi & Partners has appointed Yan Elliot as joint executive creative director with Micky Tudor.

Elliot leaves from Lucky Generals as creative partner which he has said he will be sad to leave.

K7 Media

K7 Media has appointed Gary Carter as a non-executive board member as the company develops its new service offering strategic advice to top level management.

Speaking about his new role, Carter said: “I am delighted to join the board at this exciting time for the company.”

iProspect

iProspect has further bolstered its senior team with the appointment of Felicity Long as managing director for London.

Long joins iProspect from Carat as head of digital where she led and developed a team of 35 who served local and global clients.

In her new role, Long will work closely with the existing team to aid the agency’s growth ambitions.

Amaze

Amaze chief executive Natalie Gross has left the St Ives-owned digital marketing business as it aims to closer align the agency alongside two of its other agencies, Realise and Branded3.

Gross, who joined Amaze in 1999, led its first acquisition by the Hasgrove Group in 2007, during which time she became managing partner. Four years later she became chief of the agency, which was then bought by St Ives Group for £24.3m.

Speaking to The Drum, Gross, who is also a judge at this year's Dadi Awards, explained her intention to take a short time out of the industry to work with BIMA before starting a new venture next year.

Maxus UK

Maxus UK has appointed Emil Bielski as head of business development to work on further develop Maxus’ Leading Change campaign.

Joining from MEC as head of performance, Bielski has previously developed MEC’s response product and planning process.

Anna Hickey, MD at Maxus UK comments: “The hiring of Emil highlights our commitment to data and performance.”

BWP Group

BWP Group has appointed Rob McCardle in newly created role as innovation director.

In his new role, McCardle will work closely with all departments of BWP Group. As well as heading up the digital and content teams, he’ll also liaise with the creative department to provide insight and ideas that add value for clients. In addition, McCardle will work in both the strategy and planning teams, as well as promoting innovative thought-leadership across the agency.

APAC people on the move

Maxus

Maxus APAC has announced two promotions with Rose Huskey now chief client officer and Dick Laurie as chief planning officer.

With over 20 years in the industry, including four years as managing director at Maxus Vietnam, Huskey said: “I am very excited to be collaborating with our local, regional and global teams to effectively navigate the increasingly complex marketing services landscape, to ensure that we delivering the most effective business solutions for our clients.”

Discussing his promotion, Laurie said he is looking forward to ensuring that the company continues to deliver as it has been in his new senior role.

North America people on the move

Mashable

Mashable has hired Kamelia Angelova as director of emerging platforms to expand the company's production of original video and visual storytelling on Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Prior to joining Mashable, Kamelia led Business Insider and Tech Insider's video operations. She will report to Eric Korsh, president of Mashable Studios, to be based in Mashable's global headquarters in New York. Her first day at the company will be 10 October.

Gregory Gittrich, chief content officer of Mashable, said: "We're seeing exceptional growth in audience, engagement and video views across all our distributed platforms. Kamelia is the right person to accelerate that growth even more and lead our innovative, visual storytelling across Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.”

Google

Google has poached Amazon’s former hardware chief David Foster to head up development of its new smartphone range as it amps up investment in own-brand hardware.

Serving Google as vice-president of product engineering Foster will be charged with leading development in the mobile sector following the anticipated launch of the Pixel and Pixel XL devices later today.

Foster boasts an illustrious career in the tech industry having previously served as a senior director at Apple between 1998 and 2004 before taking a year out at Gibson guitar company as chief technology officer and returning to the technology fold with Microsoft as general manager for hardware.

Advendio

Advendio has announced Jennifer Campbell as its new sales and business development manager based in Hamburg.

Campbell has previously worked in product marketing as well as working as a strategic product planning manager before starting her new role.

When discussing her role, Bernd Bube, managing director of Advendio.com GmbH expressed his excitement for Campbell to be working within in the business to help “attain our ambitious goals.”

Pinterest

Pinterest has hired its first ever chief financial officer in the form of Todd Morgenfeld, who joins from Twitter where he was vice-president, finance.

The move could signal that the visual bookmarking platform is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) according to the Wall Street Journal, but the company's chief executive has said otherwise, saying it had no plans for an IPO at this time and that the appointment simply relfected the team was "scaling the business up."

“We’re really excited to bring on Todd,” he told the Journal, adding that Pinterest's current head of finance, Natalie Fair, is “looking at other opportunities within the company."

The Martin Agency

IPG-owned The Martin Agency has hired Amber Guild to lead its growing New York office.

Guild joins from brand consultancy Collins, where she served as president. In her new role, she will report to The Martin Agency’s chief executive Matt Williams and will be tasked with growing the Richmond-based shop’s New York office, which currently has 39 employees and works with brands including Kayak.

She will work alongside James Robinson, who joined Martin New York as its first executive creative director last year after serving as co-chief creative officer at TwoFifteenMcCann.

MDC Partners

Ryan Linder, senior vice-president of business development at MDC Partners, has been promoted to the newly created role of US chief marketing officer.

In his new role, he will be tasked with overseeing marketing and business development in the US for MDC’s agency portfolio, which includes 72andSunny, Anomaly, CP+B, Mono and Assembly. He will also partner withMDC’s European chief marketing officer Lotta Malm Hallqvist and Canada’s chief marketing officer Stephanie Nerlich to drive global growth.

Linder will report to Bob Kantor, MDC’s global chief marketing and business development officer. According to MDC, Linder has “been a leading contributor to record business development on behalf of MDC and its partner agencies, including driving many of the network’s recent wins, including MillerCoors, The Hershey Company, Campbell’s Soup Co., The Truth Initiative and Beats by Dre.”
