Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has appointed Yahoo’s vice president of EMEA as its first ever chief operating officer, the creation of which could mean it is preparing to open up new revenue streams as publishers are increasingly under pressure to make up declines in print revenue.

Hugh will assume responsibility for all TMG's revenue streams and commercial operations and will report to chief executive Murdoch MacLennan.

Hugh has been working at Yahoo since 2008 in a range of senior roles, and will maintain his role for some time up until January 2017 when he will formally take up his new position at the Telegraph.

MacLennan said: "Nick has an excellent track record both with high-growth businesses and creating thriving teams. We're delighted he is joining our leadership team and will be continuing our digital transformation."

Hugh said: "I am looking forward to working with Murdoch MacLennan and alongside a range of talented executives. The Telegraph is a well-respected, trusted and quality brand, with a great team in place. I'm excited to lead the commercial team to build further on the great success that TMG has already achieved."
