The New York Times has become the latest media giant to back a newsletter startup targeting millennial women after it contributed to a $500k investment alongside Havas Group chief executive Yannick Bolloré, strategic advisory firm MediaLink and the actress Mariska Hargitay.

Following hot on the heels of an $8m investment led by 21st Century Fox, the publisher's own contribution it is the latest vote of confidence in theSkimm, which now counts 4 million subscribers drawn to its daily distillation of the day’s headlines in a conversational style.

With this backing, theSkimm is pressing ahead with a suite of new products including Skimm Studies – a selection of reports based on surveys of readers which will be offered to subscribers for free.

One of the first of these surveys found that 56 per cent of respondents backed Hillary Clinton in the upcoming US election – with just eight per cent plumping for Trump.
