Mexican fast food chain Chipotle is eyeing an expansion drive in Europe after seeing sales stall in its native US market.

Chipotle has suffered a series of setbacks across the pond including multiple outbreaks of food poisoning which have exacerbated declining sales, prompting bosses to seek new markets across the Atlantic.

To oversee these plans Chipotle has appointed European managing director Jim Slater who will attempt to change eating habits on the continent from a relatively low base – it currently has just seven outlets in the UK, four in France and three in Germany.

Slater remarked: “Chipotle's commitment to better food from ingredients raised and grown with respect for animals, farmers and the environment is consistent with how many Europeans eat and the brand is one that really resonates with customers here. The company has tremendous opportunity in Europe.”

Chipotle remains committed to its home turf however and is currently offering students with valid matriculation cards a free soft drink or iced tea with any main course to create more favourable sentiment.
