Publicis New York has animated decades-old graffiti to help bring attention to Heineken’s efforts to restore Miami Marine Stadium, a one-of-a-kind venue overlooking the water, which was put out of commission during Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

While the venue languished on the blue-green water, it took on a new life thanks to graffiti artists, who made the grandstands vibrant with their art. Publicis worked with ten artists to film a five-day shoot of meticulous stop-action animation to show what the venue had been and what it could become again.

The film, part of the beer maker’s “Cities” crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo, helps bring the stadium to life through the animation while also capturing the art that has taken place over the last 24 years with a 360-degree view.

“The Heineken Marine Stadium project has been really fun, working with so many talented artists and designers to honor an iconic piece of Miami history. This piece is a tribute to the vibrancy of the stadium’s back story, a stadium which has been a mecca to the very same local graffiti artists who came back to celebrate it,” said Andy Bird, CCO of Publicis New York.

With five cameras rolling simultaneously, ten local Miami graffiti artists hand painted every stop-motion animation sequence, frame by frame. Some scenes lasting just seconds took nearly three days to complete. From the camera movements, to the wake of the boats, each element was measured and planned.

While the campaign is a celebration of trying to bring the stadium back to life, it is also a celebration of the street art that has taken place over the last two decades – which has an uncertain future as the stadium’s restoration moves forward.

To preserve the graffiti art forever, the team walked through the entire stadium and digitally captured every wall and corridor. They then submitted the photos to Google Maps, allowing anyone to enjoy the stadium’s artistic spirit forever.
