Huawei picks Bauer social boss to be its first digital boss for the UK.

He joined this month and works with the marketing teams in the UK, Europe and globally across the consumer business. Suchak was unable to provide any further detail as to his responsibilities but did confirm that the main aim of his appointment is to grow well the brand’s position in the UK.

On his appointment, Suchak told The Drum: This an amazing opportunity to work with one of the world’s most powerful telecom giants. I’m looking forward to being part of an innovative, rapidly growing business with a focus on launching incredible new products.

The move comes as the Chinese telecoms behemoth presses ahead with a £1.32bn investment strategy in the UK despite the Brexit referendum result. Part of that pledge, which was made in 2012, is to hire 700 recruits who will work at one of the 15 locations it has across the region.

The world’s third biggest smartphone manufacturer launched a high-end smartphone with a dual-lens camera earlier this year in the hope that it could help take share from Apple and Samsung. However, the challenge it faces in markets like the UK where carriers’ subsidies have traditionally made Apple and Samsung devices more affordable, limiting Huawei’s price advantage. It’s challenge is even more pronounced in the US, where its networking business has effectively been outlawed since 2012 when a government report highlighted concerns that the equipment could be used by China to spy on Americans. Huawei has repeatedly denied these allegations.

The privately held company expects total revenues this year to hit a record $75bn.
