As rumors continue to circulate around NFL franchises moving, the Oakland Raiders have given their strongest hint yet that they are leaving California after a trademark application was submitted with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The application was filled with the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week and spans a variety of goods and service classifications which would allow the Raiders to use the new name in future commerce dealings.

While a submitted trademark application is not a guarantee that an NFL team is moving to a new location, it illustrates the degree of consideration which the Raiders are undertaking in eyeing up Las Vegas.

This has been further strengthened by a recent report from the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee which features renderings of a proposed Raiders stadium in Las Vegas.

In May, Raiders owner Mark Davis said: “I’ve given my commitment to Las Vegas, and if they can come through with what they’re talking about doing, then we’ll go to Las Vegas.

Backers of a Vegas stadium have reportedly narrowed their proposed options to two sites, but have stated that they will only go ahead with it if they receive at least $750m in public funding for the $1.9bn project, according to Associated Press.

A move to ‘Sin City’ would open up a plethora of marketing opportunities of new franchises given the huge tourism industry and the legalisation of regulated sports betting, which is still outlawed in many other states in the US.
