Pokemon fever has spread to the Nintendo 3DS according to the Japanese gaming giant, reporting a surge in sales for its 3DS handset and Pokemon-related titles off the back of its viral mobile app hit.

Sales data suggests that the 3DS handheld console was the top-selling platform in July whilst both Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, first released back in 2014, have both re-entered the top 10 charts at positions 8 and 10 respectively.

This has contributed to an 80 per cent leap in sales from last July and is even filtering down to older games such as 2013’s Pokemon X and Y which have witnessed a 200 per cent jump in sales compared to last year.

In a statement Nintendo attributed its reversal in fortunes to "widespread positive public reception for the Pokémon Go mobile app, which has renewed interest in core Pokémon games on Nintendo systems".

Despite Pokemon Go becoming a runaway overnight success story Nintendo has generated very little profit from it, with only a minor role in the game's creation.
