Forget selfies, Snapchat is letting its users take personalisation to the next level through an integration with personalised emoji maker BitStrips.

Snapchat has added Bitmoji integration / Snapchat Bitmoji

Snapchat bought BitStrips back in March in deal that was thought to be worth an estimated $100m and now it’s incorporated the startup’s Bitmoji emoticons into its own app – giving keen snappers the chance to create miniature versions of themselves to share with friends.

The emojis can be used to decorate photos and videos taken within Snapchat’s walls, and can also be sent via its chat function.

To activate the new feature, users have to download the Bitmoji app and link it to their Snapchat app. After purchasing Bitstrips, Snapchat decided to keep running its apps independently rather than killing it and folding it into its own product.

Snapchat said users should "stay tuned" to see how Bitmojis evolve in coming months, but has yet to confirm if Bitstrips chief executive Jacob 'Ba' Blackstock is working on anything else for the messaging app.
