In a statement announcing the change, Twitter said that “an account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest.” Whereas verified accounts are typically reserved for brands, public figures, artists, athletes, and journalists, the change means that more people - particularly up-and-coming creators and influencers - will now have the chance to verify their profiles.

In an online form, Twitter users who would like to be verified can submit a request by providing a confirmed email address, photo, phone number and other information. They’ll also be asked to explain why Twitter should verify their account.

In some cases, Twitter will ask users who would like to be verified to submit a copy of their passport or driver’s license to confirm their identity.

Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter's vice president of user service, said of the change: "We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification. We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience."

According to Twitter, the social platform currently has close to 187,000 verified accounts. Twitter said in a statement that the verification application process will start rolling out today and will be available globally this week.
