Business leaders have enthusiastically backed a pledge by Prime Minister Theresa May to clampdown on executive pay and tighten up corporate oversight.

City AM report a new poll by FTI Consulting which found that 81 per cent of senior leaders in small, medium and large firms were united in backing a firmer hand in deciding how Britain’s companies are run.

As part of this change in approach May will seek to introduce binding shareholder votes on pay and force companies to disclose their pay ratios in an effort to shame those disproportionately rewarding those at the top.

This policy will also see the government support employee representation on boards and stricter rules on foreign takeovers of British firms.

Dan Healy, managing director and head of research at FTI Consulting remarked: “It may seem surprising that businesses support more government intervention in the way they structure themselves and reward top performers.

“But clearly concern at high - and for some, arguably unjustified - levels of executive pay runs deep across different sections of the public and business community.”

The survey drew contributions from over 500 business leaders.
