Bullish Amazon brushes aside Brexit blowback concerns
Amazon has quashed fears of a sales slide in the wake of Britain’s decision to exit the European Union after announcing that it had observed no dip in trade and was set to add a further 1,000 UK jobs.
These roles will span head office, research and customer service and come on top of a decision to take on an extra 2,500 people taken back in January.
UK manager Doug Gurr said: “Our sales are in line with expectations... It's business as usual as far as we are concerned.”
In the longer term however Gurr acknowledges the increased uncertainty may have unforeseen consequences, he said: “There's a lot of details to be worked out ... We don't know exactly what the regulatory environment will be, we don't know exactly what the terms of the new separation will be.”
Amazon’s confidence stands in sharp contrast to other retailers such as John Lewis which reported a slowing of sales over the past week whilst Sainsbury’s urged the country not to talk itself into another recession.
