UK press respond to historic break with Europe in shock referendum result

Britain’s national newspapers have been quick to respond to a dramatic night of voting with a flurry of articles illustrating the uncharted territory in which the country now finds itself with The Telegraph reporting on early moves to unseat Prime Minister David Cameron following his narrow defeat.

The paper also looks at a likely constitutional crisis stirred up by the vote in which Northern Ireland and Scotland both voted in, with the expectation that both nations will again pursue independence.

The Daily Mirror meanwhile, a prominent campaigner for remain, leads with a front page splash declaring that Cameron will ‘stay on’ despite the result not going his way and warns that young people ‘who wanted Brexit the least will have to live with it the longest’.

Over at The Independent meanwhile heavy criticism is reserved for a ‘crass victory speech’ delivered by UKIP leader Nigel Farage after he said: ‘We won it without a bullet being fired’.

At The Times coverage states bluntly that ‘Britain votes for Brexit’ alongside an image of a beaming Nigel Farage, noting that the result will ‘remake the country’s political landscape and shatter the continent’s post war settlement’.

Prominent Brexit backing paper The Sun goes with ‘See EU later’ alongside imagery of jubilant Vote Leave supporters, it writes: “For the first time in 43 years our nation will stand on its own feet… free from the European Union.”

At the remain supporting guardian meanwhile speculation centres on what Cameron will say during a hotly anticipated speech at the door to 10 Downing Street, outlining ‘eight questions that Cameron must answer’.
