Facebook has appointed Chelsea Football Club’s head of digital marketing Jerry Newman (see above) as its new lead for sport across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Jerry Newman appointed Facebook's head of sport

Newman joins Facebook after eight years with the Premier League club and will be responsible for sports partnerships with teams, players and sport media organisations across the EMEA region.

He will be based at Facebook's London offices and will report to Patrick Walker, director of media partnerships for EMEA.

In a Facebook post announcing the news, Newman confirmed that he will be leaving Chelsea at the end of June.

“It has been an honour and a pleasure to work for such a great club. I've learnt and achieved so much in my time and I'd like to thank everyone at the club and in the sports, media and digital industry for all their support across the years,” he said.

He added: “From one prestigious organisation to the next, it is with great pleasure and excitement that I will be joining Facebook as the Lead for Sport across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). I can't wait to get started and look forward to supporting my friends and colleagues in the Sports and Media sector as well as delivering great experiences on Facebook and its platforms for passionate sports fans.”

Prior to joining Chelsea, Newman held a number of different positions for the Football Association including business analyst and sponsorship executive. He is due to take up his new position at Facebook on 16 July.

The addition of Newman reflects the social media giant's continuing focus on sports partnerships, both with sponsors and broadcasters. While Facebook Live has become an increasingly popular platform for sports broadcasts, the social network's head of sponsorships recently ruled out the business "actively" seeking making any future bids for broadcasts rights.
