Fifa auditor KPMG had raised concerns over the organisation's accounts in the weeks prior to resigning according to reports in the Wall Street Journal.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the paper stated that auditors had voiced concern over football’s governing body as it sought to overhaul its operations and concerns over expenses booked by new president Gianni Infantino.

KPMG resigned as Fifa auditor earlier this month after 16 years to clear the way for some fresh blood to ease an overhaul of its financial affairs and is in the midst of an internal review as to how it failed to pick up financial irregularities at Fifa when signing off its accounts.

In a letter to Infantino dated from early May, KPMG warned that the ‘potentially significant increase of development funds’ being distributed to Fifa's member associations bore an ‘increased risk of funds being misused’.

A further concern centred on ‘any dilution, either in form or in substance’ of reforms agreed by Fifa back in February, particularly a relative demotion of Infantino relative to the general secretary.

Infantino succeeded Sepp Blatter as head of football’s governing body three months ago.
