Both sides of Britain’s EU referendum debate are to halt campaigning for a second day following the brutal murder of Labour MP Jo Cox by a constituent.

Cox had been a prominent proponent of the UK remaining as a member of the European Union and her murder has shocked both sides in the debate, prompting the suspension of public engagements, opinion polls, televised debates and even the publication of an official report by the International Monetary Fund.

Tributes were led by Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who said: “She was an exemplary MP, a real servant of democracy in every way one could want.”

Cox was slain in the town of Birstall, Yorkshire yesterday afternoon in the midst of opinion polls putting the ‘Vote Leave’ camp ahead of those wishing to remain by a significant margin.

To add further fuel to the fire, one eyewitness claimed to have heard the man who murdered Cox shout ‘Britain First’ or ‘put Britain First’ but this version of events remains in dispute.

West Yorkshire Police have arrested a 52 year old man named locally as Tommy Mair in connection with the incident but are not yet in any position to discuss a motive.
