US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has called on technology firms to mount an ‘intelligence surge’ against ISIS propaganda in the wake of the deadliest gun attack in the country’s history.

Pledging to ‘step-up’ counter terrorism operations if elected Clinton said her hypothetical administration would up surveillance of social media and increase resources aimed at removing Islamist propaganda from the web.

Speaking just days after a gunman killed 49 and wounded 53 more at a gay nightclub in Orlando Clinton singled out technology firms as holding the key to preventing future such attacks.

In a major speech Clinton said: “As president, I will work with our great tech companies from Silicon Valley to Boston to step up our game.

"We have to [do] a better job intercepting ISIS communications, tracking and analysing social media posts and mapping jihadist networks, as well as promoting credible voices who can provide alternatives to radicalisation.”

Facebook, Twitter and Google are amongst those firms which have agreed to work with US and European governments in this area, despite protestations from civil liberties campaigners.

Despite fears that gunman Omar Mateen may have been directly instructed to carry out the killings by ISIS US president Barack Obama said that there was no evidence to that effect, suggesting that the attack was in fact an instance of ‘homegrown extremism’.
