Sainsbury’s finance chief John Rogers has been handed the task of merging the retailer’s non-food business with that of Argos after being elevated to the top spot at Home Retail Group.

As part of a lengthy to do list Rogers will also face the challenge of embracing digital technology to help drive sales at the business.

Sainsbury’s chief Mike Coupe commented: “John’s expertise goes beyond his finance role; his leadership expertise in strategy, digital, online and property make John the ideal candidate to lead Home Retail Group and ensure we deliver our ambition to be the leading multi-channel, multi-product retailer of choice for customers."

The move will take place as soon as the ink is dry on the supermarket chain’s takeover of Argos’ parent company with incumbent John Walden set to step down from the top job when that occurs.

Sainsbury’s agreed to spend £1.4bn for Home Retail Group in March in a bid to diversify away from its core food business where it has been hit by declining sales.
