Facebook is enabling members to post videos as comments for the first time, further extending its multimedia drive across desktop, iOS and Android platforms.

The social network has integrated the new function within comments on posts and status updates and can be activated simply by clicking the camera button beneath a string of replies. Previously this function was only available to add a photo.

Facebook has been beavering away behind the scenes to add the new feature for the past few months as engineers strove to guarantee support across a multitude of interfaces amidst constant high traffic.

Its final implementation is the latest indication of the priority Facebook now bestows upon video following its introduction of live streaming services last year and the addition of a dedicated video tab in April.

The network has also invested heavily in persuading publishers to produce regular monthly videos to ensure that motion pictures are placed at the heart of every corner of the site.
