Netflix Originals dominated the top two spots in May. Jane Fonda's Grace and Frankie was number one, followed by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Grace and Frankie

On Hulu Family Guy and The Flash dominated. Here are the charts and insights from SimilarWeb for May.

Netflix:

  • Who are Grace and Frankie? Just Netflix’s biggest stars of May 2016, twice as popular than any other show during the month. The show’s second season, with 13 half-hour episodes, was released on 6 May, and fans were quick to binge watch the show in droves.
  • With Grace and Frankie rising to the top, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was relegated to second place from first place the month before. The show took 16 per cent of the traffic share, just slightly ahead of American Dad, which saw its 10th season added to Netflix on 17 May.
  • Despite having its second season being released back in mid-March, Daredevil has managed to maintain a strong Netflix audience as the show ranks fourth overall in popularity.
  • The same applied to House of Cards, which had its fourth season released on 4 March. Still, the show was able to maintain its position in fifth and even increased its traffic share slightly since last month.
  • Family Guy and Grey’s Anatomy are two popular non-Netflix originals that enjoyed a strong month with Netflix users. Family Guy took fifth place with 5.1 per cent of the traffic, while Grey’s took eighth with 4.6 per cent.
  • Rounding out the bottom of the list are three comedies that have been over for at least two years each. Friends, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother were able to beat out popular shows such as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, both of which were among the top 10 in last month’s rankings.

Hulu:

  • 16 years after launching its first season, Family Guy has managed to remain extremely relevant and popular, especially among Hulu users who have made it the most popular show of May. After not ranking last month, Family Guy has shot to the top, raking in over 12 per cent of the traffic share.
  • After Family Guy, the show with the best viewership in May was The Flash which jumped from ninth last month up to 2nd place in May.
  • Other shows that were able to rise in the rankings include The Mindy Project which rose from fourth to third and Modern Family which jumped from eighth to fifth.
  • What happened to Brooklyn Nine-Nine? The Show was Hulu’s most popular show in April, with 13 per cent of the traffic share, but seems to have fallen out of favor in May.
  • South Park leads the list of shows which saw their rank drop slightly since last month as the show dropped from second to fourth.
  • Interestingly enough, Grey’s Anatomy was the eighth most popular show on both Netflix and Hulu this past month. Grey’s joins Family Guy as the only two shows to rank among the top 10 of both streaming sites.
  • In two spots the rankings are actually identical to last month’s. New Girl remained in seventh and Saturday Night Live was unable to improve upon its position in 10th.
