Airbnb has begun trialling a new City Hosts program which promises guests their own private guide offering personalised tips and advice in addition to a roof over their heads.

City Hosts is the latest bid by the house sharing specialist to differentiate itself from the hotel sector by offering added value to guests with services they cannot find anywhere else.

Lodgers will now be able to rent private tour guides under the private beta in San Francisco, London, Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo to put experiences front and centre of its offer.

Styled on Netflix, this gives people the ability to choose from 36 customisable entertainment experiences such as the self-explanatory ‘party animal’ and ‘art luminary’ as well as ‘hood cruiser’ for people keen to get on their bikes and explore the local environment on two wheels.

Other City Hosts will offer experiences ranging from kite surfing in San Francisco to cooking lessons with a Paris chef and a tour of London’s Grime music scene – all of which may be experienced individually or as part of a group.
