Netflix's major exclusivity deal with Disney about to begin
Netflix has claimed a victory over its rivals after announcing that it will be the exclusive streaming service for Disney and Pixar movies, as well as Marvel and LucasFilm properties, starting this September.
While the online streaming giant has largely focused on strengthening its original catalogue recently the exclusive partnership with Disney will help ensure it continues to offer viewers huge blockbuster films such as the new Star Wars films, The Avengers and The Jungle Book.
"From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar," said Ted Sarandos, the company's content boss, in a recent blog post.
Netflix will have the films available to offer shortly after their release on DVD and Blu-Ray and the exclusivity of the contract effectively shuts out rivals such as HBO, Amazon Prime and Hulu.
The news comes over three years after Netflix agreed the deal with Disney for the rights to offer the media giant’s content on the platform which is only now coming into effect.because the contract between Disney and pay-TV channel Starz expires in September.
